OutZone and Amanda, (from Foundation66), have been working together for a number of years to engage and educate gay and bisexual young men about the risks, health implications and personal and social responsibilities associated with drug and alcohol use/misuse.

Our partnership arrangement allows us to offer regular on-site specialist support and lively, thought-provoking, group work sessions to young men from across the capital (and beyond!).

Our approach centres around a harm reduction model and tackles issues including personal/social responsibility, health awareness and emotional well being. We actively encourage participation and the sharing of personal experiences - while fostering a culture of trust, honesty and mutual peer support.

OutZone's partnership initiative with Amanda and Foundation 66 supports the work we do to meet the needs of young men we work with; many of whom - at point of contact - are already risking long-term damage to their physical and mental health as a result of (sometimes life-threatening) drug and/or alcohol use.

The type of issues we support OutZone users with include:
  • alcohol dependancy (addiction)
  • drug dependancy (addiction)
  • binge-drinking (frequent & occasional)
  • binge drug use (frequent & occasional)
  • combination drug/alcohol use
  • long-term/compulsive/habitual use
  • impact on personal safety
  • effects on physical health, mental health, motivation and mobility
  • dealing with the effects of being 'spiked' or having a bad experience(s)
  • increasing evidence of experimentation with 'legal highs' - seemingly compounding risk taking behaviour and the (unknown/proven)dangers to physical and mental health

More recently, Amanda has been able to offer monthly* 'drop-in' one-to-one support
during weekly OutZone sessions as part of our TIPSY? pilot project.**

*Outzone users can gain supported access to any appropriate support service - at anytime - via our confidential one2one and support service.

**as part of our targeted intervention programme supporting young gay men pilot project for at-risk young men who access OutZone.
