This page is usually updated on or before the 1st day of each month. OutZone youth group members are also able to receive regular email alerts and event updates with the very latest information and or/programme changes. Click here for the current weekly programme.

April - June 2010 Programme Preview & Session Planning

It’s April! As usual, the first Friday of every month is always New Members Night. Get OUT and about in April with OutZone. You know you want to…

We'll be previewing the next three months at OutZone and asking for your ideas and thoughts on what you think should be going on during weekly group sessions. Come along and/or email your ideas to: info@outzone.org.

Friday 16th April
Self Defense and 'Breakaway Techniques'

The reported 48% rise in gun crime, and almost 27% rise in homophobic attacks on London’s streets during 2009 means it’s even more important that we learn what we can do now to help keep ourselves as safe as possible. Our very own Theresa (the 'original' Girl Diva) will be at OutZone tonight to show us some cool self-defense and breakaway techniques that might help - should you ever find yourself in need of them. Another fantastic OutZone session, not to be missed!

Friday 23rd April
Election Fever!

With a General Election just around the corner (OutZone predicts it'll be on Thursday 6th May) and politicians of all persuasions (good and bad) promising us just how much better they are going to make things (so long as we mark a cross next to their name on election day), OutZone will be digging a little deeper and taking a look at the choices laid before us - in order to decide which way we’re going to swing… as it were.

Will there be a ‘Brown Bounce’ or can ‘Cameron and Co.’ pull it off? Does the sound of 'Prime Minister Clegg', float your boat? Just how hung can a parliament be? Is a swing-o-meter a good or bad thing? How stupid must one be to vote BNP? Ahem...

Whatever you think about politicians and politics, it's vital that you cast your vote on polling day. Check out the links to the three main political parties below:

Friday 30th April
OutZone Remembers the11th Anniversary of the London Nail Bomb Attacks

In a change to the previously advertised programme, OutZone will be using its time tonight to create some anti-homophobia promotional materials for the www.outzone.org website.  A service of remembrance will be taking place in central London, organised by the Soho Remembers 17-24-30 campaign to mark the 11th anniversary of Soho nail-bombings.   Join the online campaign on Facebook: Search for 17-24-30 and show your support for this worthy campaign.

Info from the Soho Remembers 17-24-30 campaign:
  • Back in 1999 over a period of three weeks the nail bomber David Copeland planted three nail bombs, targeting three different communities. The first bomb was planted in Brixton on the 17th April 1999 targeting the Black community, the second bomb targeted the Asian community in Brick Lane on the 24th April 1999 and the third bomb killed three people when it exploded on the 30th April 1999 in the Admiral Duncan pub targeting the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered community of Soho. The bomber was caught before he was able to plant his next bomb targeting the Jewish community in Golders Green. What David Copeland wanted to do was strike fear into these communities and provoke a backlash which would result in the election of the BNP. Luckily his plan failed. OutZone Video VoxPops 2010...

As 2010 (rapidly!) approaches and OutZone enters its 'teenage years' (ooeerr..), Philly thought it might be a cool idea to put together some video (and/or audio) 'voxpops' (for our websites) in order to help other young gays in and around London find out more about what they might be missing if they haven't (yet) made it along to OutZone on Friday nights...

All we need you to do is....turn up and think a bit about:

It's YOUR OutZone... Why not share the love?

Tonight’s workshop will be focussing on safer sex, sexual practice, and learning to feel comfortable discussing sex and sexual preferences in relationships. We’ll be guiding you though how to use condoms and lube, to help ensure any sex you choose to have is as safe and as comfortable as possible, and looking at what support is available if things go wrong or need further support and information. Even if you think you know it all already, it’s never a bad thing to refresh your knowledge and keep up to date with current trends.

We’ll also be introducing a new element to this workshop, if you’ll pardon the gag, which focuses on making sure you understand the ‘mechanics’ of protected anal sex. If you are, (or considering becoming) sexually active, (and there should no pressure to be one thing or the other) come along tonight and take part in this fun, but essential sexual health workshop for young gay men. There will be no pressure to share anything about yourself or your sexual activity that you don’t feel comfortable with.

*This session contains references to sexual practices and may include sexually explicit language. OutZone understands that it’s members are all at different stages in their sexual and social development. Therefore the session is only suitable for young men aged 16 years and older.

Walk away each week feeling a little more inspired and seeing a lot more of your potential!”

OutZone Winter Film Club – LGBT History Month - Youth And Education Special **DON’T MISS!**
“Two of Us” (BBC 1986)

Join us tonight as we take a nostalgic look back at a 1986 BBC Schools Programme that aimed to ‘address’ the issue of ‘homosexuality’ - and the subsequent outcry that surrounded it... (...yes, it’s in ‘colour’ - yes, it’s good ;)
twoofus

  • “Two of Us” (BBC 1986) - “Matthew is a boy who just left school. He is handsome and athletic and believes himself to be gay. He retains a friendship with only one school friend, Phil, who has stuck by Matthew despite hostile reactions from his peers. As their relationship grows more intense, Phil's girlfriend Sharon and his classmates become vindictive and aggressive. The two friends find themselves ostracized by both friends and family and decide to run away …”

  • “I believe the BBC is behaving in a manner which is irresponsible, corrupt, and dangerous” – Peter Dawson, General Secretary Professional Association of Teachers.

While the film in itself is an excellent portrayal (in BBC terms) of what ‘life’ was like for gay young people in ‘Thatchers Britain’ in 1986, it was seen as ‘a step too far’ for modern day Britain. The film finally got aired at 11.30pm on Friday 25th March 1988. Come and find out what all the fuss was about!!!

EVENT NEWS REVIEW:

There were several Youth@Pride events taking place all over the capital in the run up to Pride 2007 and it all kicked off on Friday 22nd June with the biggest pre-pride gathering of queer youth London has ever seen...

Over 100 LGBT young people attended the event in Soho Square on Friday evening (22nd June). 118 to be exact (ish). We understand this is the biggest pre-pride public gathering of queer youth to date (!) - does that make us record breakers...Hmmmm? (Note to self: Next year we must invite the Guinness Book of Records to 'officially' record the event....)

Pink Paper and Pink News covered the event, and you see the report by Pink News here: http://www.pinknews.co.uk/news/articles/2005-4739.html

Our special thanks go out to The Millivres Prowler Group (MPG) for providing support and distributing goody bags; and to The Pink Paper and Pink News for covering the event. This event also received £200 towards costs from PRIDE London, as part of the London-wide Youth@Pride celebrations.

'Alcohol use and PACE Youthwork Service Users' (May 2007)

"OutZone works exclusively with young men aged 25 and under who make use of our services on a voluntary basis. OutZone encourages the responsible use of alcohol with those who are legally entitled to buy and consume it on licensed premises in the UK"

Because of the nature of our work, many of our service-wide social events take place in licensed premises where bar staff are legally entitled to serve alcohol to those who are aged 18 and over (and able to prove it).

Young men who attend OutZone social events that take place in licensed premises are permitted to purchase and consume alcohol while participating in PACE Youthwork Service facilitated events. Service users who, in the opinion of youthwork staff, misuse alcohol during service wide events - regardless of their age - may be prevented from attending future events.

PACE Youthwork Service staff will have no hesitation in informing licensees of any under-age drinking that they are aware of during service-wide social events that take place on licensed premises. Underage drinking during service wide social events that occurs in unlicensed premises will not be permitted and may jeopardise future events and your participation in them.

Please remember - as a service user - you and youthwork staff have a civic duty to act within the law. Why not make 2007 the year you explore your OutZone?

If you’re aged 25 or under and thinking about ‘coming out’ or could just do with a bit of support and advice - as well as making some cool new friends (!) - There’s never been a better time to join us here at OutZone. In the next few weeks there’s lot’s of new things coming up and the chance to join us on the first of this year’s residential weekends… though there’s no pressure take part in anything unless you want to. If you just want to come along, sit back and see what goes on, that’s fine too.

Our weekly, Friday night youth group attracted over one hundred different young men during 2006 and celebrates its tenth birthday this year, on 14th February 2007. The youth group is a safe, friendly and confidential space where you can meet new people of your own age, find out more about how to stay safe and healthy in a big city like London and access experienced youth workers (in confidence) around any issue. Weekly youth group members are usually aged 16/17 to 24/25. If you’d like to come along you need to call or email us first. You can find out more by clicking here.

If you’re not ready to come along to the group, but would still like to have a chat with a member of the youthwork team, that’s ok too - you can find out more here.

Plot Outline: Filmmaker Jonathan Caouette's documentary on growing up with his schizophrenic mother -- a mixture of snapshots, Super-8, answering machine messages, video diaries, early short films, and more -- culled from 19 years of his life.

Plot Synopsis: Part documentary, part narrative fiction, part home movie, and part acid trip. A psychedelic whirlwind of snapshots, Super-8 home movies, old answering machine messages, video diaries, early short films, snippets of '80s pop culture, and dramatic reenactments to create an epic portrait of an American family travesty. The story begins in 2003 when Jonathan learns that his schizophrenic mother, Renee, has overdosed on her lithium medication. He is catapulted back into his real and horrifying family legacy of rape, abandonment, promiscuity, drug addiction, child abuse, and psychosis. As he grows up on camera, he finds the escapist balm of musical theater and B horror flicks and reconnects to life through a queer chosen family. Then a look into the future shows Jonathan as he confronts the symbiotic and almost unbearable love he shares with his beautiful and tragically damaged mother. (Amazon.com)

OutZone Boyz Night Out - The Retro Bar
After lengthy deliberations, tonight we are off to The Retro Bar. We will be meeting (river side) outside Embankment tube station (Northern, District, Circle lines) between 7.15 and 7.30pm. The Retro Bar is just a short walk away. See following review of the bar from itchylondon.co.uk:

"Tucked away behind the chain-pub bores of The Strand, wearing flared jeans and Adidas trainers, you'll find The Retro, one of London's friendliest and most refreshing gay pubs. Predominantly in the 'alternative' vein, Retro also plays host to indie, rock, goth, 80s, DIY DJ and the legendary Wednesday karaoke session. And on Sunday, board games are provided – hooray."

Having Sex: Doing it - RIGHT?!
Tonight we are going to 'cut to the chase'. We are going to have a 'no holds barred' look a what it means to 'have sex'. While we won't expect you to share any personal information about your own sex lives, we will look at some of the most common sexual practices for young gay and bisexual men, and we hope the information we provide will be informative and thorough. Don't forget: you can speak to any member of staff in the strictest confidence, about any issue - including concerns you may have if you are thinking about having sex for the first time, or even if you consider yourself an expert...both during OutZone sessions and at other times by appointment. If we can't help with your problem or concern, we almost certainly know someone who can...

Friday 25th November
Yoga and Relaxation with Derek!
Because all the positive feedback we received about the last yoga and relaxation session, we’ve asked Derek to come back and do another one! It’s probably a good idea to wear some loose fitting clothes, but it's not essential. All you need to do is bring yourself along to OutZone from 7.30pm tonight.

Special Guest speaker - Peter Tatchell - only @ OutZone

More about Peter Tatchell:
Peter Tatchell has campaigned for sexual freedom and human rights since 1969. His activism mirrors almost exactly the whole history of the modern, post-Stonewall Riot gay liberation movement. Throughout more than 30 years of political activism and writing, he has helped develop new analyses and theories of queer emancipation (liberation), and contributed to changing public opinion and overturning homophobic discrimination. Thought-provoking and unafraid to ask awkward questions, he is the author of six books and over 3,000 published articles, many of which have presented heretical, innovative ideas on issues of sexuality and sexual human rights. Rejecting queer conformity to straight institutions and the goal of mere legal equality, he advocates the transformation of society to create a sex-positive and human rights culture that will benefit everyone, both gay and straight.

Friday 23rd September 2005
The Empire Pays Back - (Video/Discussion)
Tonight we will showing (and discussing) another excellent Channel 4 documentary that examines Britain's role in the transatlantic slave trade. Check out the mini-review below:

"In The Empire Pays Back, Dr Beckford looks at how much Britain profited from the Transatlantic Slave Trade and consults a team of experts to put a monetary figure on the amount owing to the descendants of slaves. Dr Beckford argues that Britain should repay its debt to the descendants of slavery.

To find out how much slavery was worth to the British Empire, Robert assembles a team of an actuary, compensation lawyer and an economic historian specialising in the slave trade. Drawing on other modern-day compensation cases, the team will be taking into account the unpaid wages, pain and suffering of the slaves; the unjust enrichment of British industry; and the loss of earnings to future generations due to the legacy of racism which followed slavery. Dr Beckford would like to see the government offer an official apology when the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery is commemorated in 2007."

"...A thought-provoking piece that is hilariously entertaining whilst also being profoundly moving. One of the most exciting, controversial and talked-about plays of 2005 returns to the stage at Stratford East for all those who missed it's all-too-short run earlier this year. Rarely does a play take you on such an emotional white-knuckle ride. Rarely does a piece of theatre challenge so many preconceptions and touch so many raw nerves. Rarely does such a thought-provoking piece manage to be so hilariously entertaining whilst also being so profoundly moving. BASHMENT is a play about the causes of hate and the nature of love. It is a play for our times..

We'll also look at what can go wrong if we drink too much and think about ways to make sure we keep ourselves safe... Take part in our quiz to find out just how much you really know...

Events and Workshop Planning
Christmas is coming (already!)… Its time to think about what we to do at OutZone during December, so lets have a couple of good ideas to round off 2004 with. (Last session of 2004: Friday 17th December – Jacksons Lane Christmas Panto/OutZone Social - More details to follow shortly…) We’ll also use some time tonight to look at what ‘issue- based’ workshops and/or group work sessions you would like to see included in the OutZone programme for the early part of 2005.

Friday 29th October
OutZoneBoyZ Social Nite IN
Slight change of plan this month. (Apologies to those of you expecting a night out in London with the group!) Instead, OutZone will meet in Highgate, as usual, and we'll use the time to catch up with what everyone has been up to. It's also Andy's long-awaited return to the group, so drop in and say hi :) Social: 8.00pm onwards (Local)
